Why am I getting 'Permission Denied' or 'Access Denied' while trying to access the AzNET news server?

If you are connected to the internet from outside of zNET's dialup lines (or using one of our lines outside of California), you need to set up your newsreader program to authenticate to our news server. You will also need to specify a different news server name (just use the name of your AzNET mail server as the name of your news server, for example, la.aznet.net instead of news.aznet.net). Failure to do so will cause a Permission Denied or Access Denied error. If you are getting this error, you just need to set your news reader settings to allow you to authenticate. These are the settings you'll need and how to make the changes:

  1. Netscape 4.7x: Go to Edit->Preferences, click on Mail and Newsgroups, and click on Newsgroups Servers. Click "Add" to add an new Newsgroups profile. For the News Server name, enter the name of your AzNET mail server. Check "Always use name and password". Additionally, you must be sure that your username is in the form username@znet.com in order for our NTTP server to be able to authenticate you.

  2. Outlook Express: Click on Tools->Accounts. In the Account window, click on the News tab, highlight the entry for AzNET and click the Properties (or Edit, if you are on Macintosh) button. Change the name of the News Server to the name of your AzNET mail server, check "My news server requires me to log on", and enter your AzNET email user name (EX: username@znet.com) ( and password in the "Account ID" and "Password" boxes.

  3. Pine: Open Pine, press 's' for Setup and 'c' to get to the Configure screen. Go the entry for nntp-server and change the entry as per the below (substituting your mail server for "mail.server" and your mail username for "my_username"):
    mail.server/user=my_username@znet.com

Then press 'e' to exit and save changes when prompted. When you next use Pine to access the news server, it will prompt you for your password; just enter your AzNET mail password.

  4. Slrn: Add the following line to your .slrnrc file (substitute your mail server name, email username and password in the line below, make sure to put quotes around each):
    nnrpaccess "your.mail.server" "your.username@znet.com" "your.password"

If you prefer not to put your password in the file, you can leave it blank and slrn will prompt you for it.

  5. Forte / Free Agent: Select the Options menu, and then Preferences. Under the User Profile tab, check "Server requires authorization login". Enter your email username (EX: username@znet.com) in the "Username" field and check "Remember password between sessions". Enter your password in the "Password" field. Select the System tab and in the space for News Server, enter the name of your AzNET mail server. Click OK.
